Heritage restored to its former glory: a characterful corner building in the heart of Antwerp shines once again
In the lively Kloosterstraat, where history and city life intersect, stands a 19th-century corner building that has been part of Antwerp’s streetscape for decades. With its elegant wooden bay window and unique colour palette, the building is a landmark for local residents and passers-by alike. Thanks to careful restoration by Stemo Schildersbedrijf from Sint-Niklaas, in collaboration with Ralston Colour & Coatings, this heritage building has been restored to its former glory.
A piece of Antwerp’s soul
‘From the very first moment, we felt that this would not be an ordinary renovation,’ says Andy Finet of Stemo. “It was about preserving a piece of Antwerp’s soul. Every detail had to be right, from the façade ornaments to the choice of colours. Everything was done in consultation with the heritage conservation authorities and the city, because the building is listed and visually anchored in the neighbourhood.”
The restoration was therefore no easy task. The owner wanted to restore the building with respect for the past, but had to comply with strict heritage requirements. No intervention was allowed to affect the character of the building. Even the colours were fixed, as a cultural reference point for the neighbourhood.
From decay to craftsmanship
The building was in poor condition when work began. ‘The woodwork was rotten in many places, the paint was flaking off and previous repairs were often superficial,’ says Andy. ‘The last time it was painted was more than ten years ago. Wind, rain and air pollution had taken their toll.’
A thorough analysis of the situation quickly identified the challenges. Together with Daisy Seghers, technical advisor at Ralston, a paint solution was developed that not only met the heritage requirements, but was also sustainable and aesthetically pleasing.
Smart system choice for varying wood types
The façade consisted of a mix of different wood types – a challenge for any craftsman. ‘We opted for a deep-penetrating bio-based primer, Ralston Aqua All-Primer, followed by Ralston Aqua 3-in-1 Satin,” explains Daisy. ‘This microporous lacquer is water-based, breathable and perfectly suited to varying wood types. What’s more, it is environmentally friendly and technically advanced.’
Ralston’s pigment pastes played a key role in colour retention. Thanks to their intense grinding, they deliver bright, colourfast results that are resistant to wind and weather – an absolute added value for heritage restoration.

Step-by-step approach with attention to detail
The work began with a thorough inspection. Colour samples were taken on the ground floor and reference colours were determined based on historical research. This was followed by meticulous preparation of the surface: cleaning, sanding, burning where necessary, and replacing old putty in accordance with heritage regulations.
Wood rot was repaired on site, and missing parts were skilfully reconstructed by a local carpenter. Ralston Uniplex Extra, a product that excels in wear resistance and colour fastness, was chosen for the jointing and concrete work.
It is noteworthy that a conscious decision was made to move away from solvent-based systems. ‘Water-based paints are more flexible and durable today, especially for complex wood structures and outdoor use,’ emphasises Daisy.
Logistics and cooperation as the key to success
The restoration took four weeks and required tight coordination. From deliveries to scaffolding, from carpentry to technical adjustments – everything had to be coordinated. ‘Even obtaining parking permits required creative solutions,’ laughs Andy. ‘But thanks to the smooth cooperation between all parties involved – from the owner to our wholesaler Thiry Paints – the process went smoothly.’
A façade with character
The result is impressive. ‘The building shines again in its original colours, respecting the past and ready for the future,’ concludes Andy. ‘We are confident that this finish will last for years to come. And the neighbourhood? It now has a visual anchor point that once again exudes character and quality.’
This project shows how craftsmanship, innovative products and a shared vision can come together in a restoration that is not only technically outstanding, but also touches the heart of the city.
