Biobased a day in the sun!

The developments aimed at improving process and product sustainability are moving ever forward, and Royal Van Wijhe is very active. We continue to seek ways of reducing the impact on our environment, resources, health and climate, while at the same time improving the quality of our processes and products. At Ralston, it was decided to present our no. 1 product in the wallpaint range for certification. We can now proudly report that our biobased wallpaint has been crowned with the European Ecolabel. Ralston ExtraTex Mat was tested and complied with the EU Eco label criteria.

EU Ecolabel’s global multi-criteria approach

The impact of a product throughout each stage of the life cycle, from extracting the resource to production and distribution (including packaging), is key in determining if the product qualifies for the EU Ecolabel. The resources (base materials) used are assessed on the basis of a minimum of 17 criteria.

EU Ecolabel products are made with the objective of minimising the product’s footprint, in terms of base material, energy, water, hazardous substances, waste and packaging.

Developed by science, based on nature, made with passion

Combined with BIOBASED technology

Ralston has a reputation for using biobased technology. All our sustainable wallpaints are developed on the basis of renewable biobased resources. What are biobased resources?

Biobased resources are base materials derived from organic (residual) material, usually vegetable crops. A key requirement being that the resource must be able to renew itself within the life cycle of the product in which it is used.

This is how biobased resources can provide a renewable base material as opposed to a fossilised resource, which has taken many (ten) thousands of years to form.

Biobased resources can also be obtained from organic residual material, known as ‘biomass’. Biomass is a very broad concept that includes, for example, sugar cane reeds, potato waste, beetroot pulp, manure, animal fats, as long as it is organic in nature.

Contributing to the preservation of irreplaceable resources and a healthy future for the planet. This is what biobased means.

Sustainable course

Recently, Royal Van Wijhe Verf obtained the ISO14001 environment certificate. We were also the first chemical enterprise to join the international B-CORP group. Developments which, once more, underscore the sustainable course our company is pursuing. Our goal: contributing to a colourful world, in which paints contain a lot of renewable resources. We’re going for that, 100%.
