One of the most notable characteristics of the Ralston tinting system is the fact that it requires only 2 base paints for each product. The fact that only the white base paint needs to be prepared on the basis of colour strength, distinguishes the system from universal systems.
| | Solvent-based paints: - Solvent-based alkyd enamels based on medium oil and long oil alkyds, modified or not: - Alkyd base paint (gloss/semi-gloss) - Silicon base paint (gloss/semi-gloss) - Urethane alkyd base paint (gloss/semi-gloss) - High solid base paint (gloss/semi-gloss) - Alkyd primers
| | Water-based paints: - Water-based enamels and wall-paints based on acrylic dispersions, copolymers and/or alkyd emulsions combinations: - Acrylic base paint (gloss/semi-gloss) - Wall paints - Polyurethane acrylic base paint (gloss/semi gloss) - Alkyd emulsion paint - Requirements of base paints (to use the tinting system)
| | Base white (AQ / ALK): -The colour strength of base paint white has to be adjusted to the nearest Ralston standard. -The colour strength of base paint white has to be reproducible, so all batches of one and the same product have to have the same colour strength with specification of DL ± 0.2. -The compatibility (rub-out test) with Ralston colorants should be acceptable.
| | Base transparent (AQ / ALK): -The compatibility (rub-out test) with Ralston colorants should be acceptable. | |
